ams OSRAM’s ALIYOS Bond Vision demonstrator integrates LED-on-foil lighting with display optics, touch and haptics. It is a particularly clear example of the automotive surface becoming an electronic system.

The surface is the product
ams OSRAM and VIA optronics have demonstrated ALIYOS Bond Vision, a concept that combines LED-on-foil illumination with optical bonding, displays and interactive controls. The project was announced in September, making it a worthwhile recent development missed by the initial weekly selection. Its significance is not simply another ambient-lighting effect. The demonstrator treats light, information and user input as functions of a common surface rather than as separate modules installed behind trim.
Thin enough to change the architecture
The ALIYOS foil is described as less than one millimetre thick, using mini-LEDs on a flexible, transparent substrate with very fine conductor tracks. In Bond Vision, VIA optronics contributes
optical bonding and display-integration expertise. The partners demonstrate hidden-until-lit symbols, light behind decorative coverings, display extensions and touch-compatible surfaces with haptic feedback. A conventional cockpit might need a display, a light guide, a button assembly and separate tactile feedback hardware to achieve comparable functions.
A seamless visual transition
One difficult aspect of integrated HMI is making the illuminated area beside a screen feel like part of the same design. Differences in colour, luminance, diffusion and optical depth can expose the
boundary between technologies. The Bond Vision concept is designed to reduce that visual discontinuity. ams OSRAM cites an LCD luminance target above 1,000 cd/m² and homogeneity above
92% for the demonstrator. Those figures should be understood as stated targets or demonstrator parameters, not proof of full vehicle qualification.
Why the manufacturing stack matters
A flexible foil may be very thin, but the installed system also contains adhesives, cover materials, drivers, connectors and protection layers. Optical bonding can reduce air gaps and reflections, yet
introduces demands for process cleanliness, tolerance control and long-term material compatibility. The true engineering opportunity is to simplify the total stack while maintaining consistent
appearance and reliable sensing over temperature, humidity and vibration cycles.
A new supply-chain boundary
This technology also blurs ownership between lighting suppliers, display specialists, trim manufacturers and HMI teams. A single illuminated control surface must be designed across
disciplines from the outset. That may be harder to organise than purchasing conventional components separately, but it creates opportunities to reduce assembly steps and visible part count
if the integrated architecture proves robust enough.
Reliability is the deciding factor
The most difficult questions are likely to appear after the demonstrator leaves the exhibition stand. Transparent conductors, encapsulation, adhesive layers and cover materials must maintain optical performance under temperature cycling and humidity. A tactile actuator must deliver consistent feedback despite differences in trim stiffness and installation. Uniform illumination has to survive ageing without obvious colour or brightness drift. These requirements make the interface a combined optical, mechanical and electronics qualification problem. A thin foil is an enabling ingredient, but a carmaker buys the performance of the complete surface over the vehicle’s intended life. That is where prototypes must become manufacturing systems.
The Lux View
ALIYOS Bond Vision illustrates the shift from lighting as a feature to lighting as part of the surface electronics. The most important specification may eventually be neither
luminance nor thickness in isolation, but the number of functions a qualified surface can perform per millimetre of installation depth.
