For Elumin8, developing automotive illumination is about more than creating light. It is about understanding the space available, the visual effect required and the demands of the vehicle — then engineering a lighting system that brings all three together.
For Aston Martin, Elumin8 developed a compact LED lightpack designed specifically for illuminated treadplate applications.
The technology formed part of a cross-platform programme shared across the Aston Martin Vantage, DB11 and DB12, providing a common lighting architecture that could be engineered into different vehicle applications while maintaining the same premium illumination quality.
Developed from Elumin8’s expertise in ultra-slim LED lighting, the lightpack combines LED technology and optical elements within an extremely compact package. Elumin8’s wider R&D programme includes the development of LED lightpacks below 4mm in thickness, specifically addressing vehicle applications where available packaging depth is highly constrained.

The Challenge
Creating an illuminated treadplate for a luxury vehicle presents a deceptively complex engineering challenge.
The available space within the door sill is limited, yet the illuminated graphic needs to appear bright, uniform and precisely controlled.
At the same time, the lighting system must remain discreet when it is not illuminated. There is no room for bulky components or obvious evidence of the electronics and optics behind the finished surface.
For Aston Martin, there was an additional challenge: the lighting solution needed to support more than one vehicle platform.
The Vantage, DB11 and DB12 each have their own design language, packaging constraints and component architecture. The opportunity for Elumin8 was to develop a common lighting technology that could provide a consistent premium experience while being adaptable enough to integrate across the different programmes.
This required the lightpack to be designed as an engineered platform in its own right.
Our Solution
Elumin8 developed a super slim LED lightpack combining LED technology and precision optical elements within a highly compact assembly.
The development was driven by the physical constraints of the treadplate application. By reducing the depth of the lighting system, Elumin8 created greater freedom for the surrounding component design while retaining the optical performance required for a premium illuminated feature.
The lightpack was then engineered as a cross-platform solution for Aston Martin.
Its core technology could be carried across the Vantage, DB11 and DB12 programmes, while the surrounding integration could be adapted to the requirements of each vehicle.
This approach allowed Elumin8 to maintain consistency at the technology level while providing the flexibility required at vehicle level.
The result is a lighting system that does exactly what good automotive illumination should do: remain almost invisible until it is needed.
When activated, the light is delivered through the treadplate with a controlled, refined appearance that complements the materials and design of the surrounding component.
Behind that simplicity is a complete Elumin8 engineering process — from the initial lighting concept and electronic design through prototyping, optical development, validation and production.
Elumin8’s approach is built around developing these technologies in-house and taking them beyond the prototype stage into production-ready automotive components.
The Outcome
The illuminated treadplate became a subtle but distinctive part of the Aston Martin experience.
Across the Vantage, DB11 and DB12, the underlying Elumin8 lightpack provides the technology required to turn a conventional door sill into a refined illuminated feature.
For the customer, the effect is simple: a carefully controlled illumination that appears naturally integrated into the vehicle.
For Aston Martin, the cross-platform approach provides a lighting solution developed around the requirements of multiple luxury vehicle programmes.
For Elumin8, the project demonstrates the value of developing the technology behind the feature.
By creating a compact, adaptable LED lightpack, Elumin8 was able to take a core lighting innovation and engineer it for multiple Aston Martin applications — combining optical performance, compact packaging and production engineering within one scalable lighting solution.
