Advanced LED Systems Designed for Personalisation
One of our earlier LED programmes for Land Rover saw Elumin8 develop a complete lightpack solution for the L550 Discovery illuminated tread plates. The system was designed around interchangeable illuminated inserts, allowing a common lighting platform to support different customer and vehicle variants.
Working as a Tier 2 supplier to GSM, Elumin8 provided the complete electronic design, development and validation of the lighting system, alongside manufacture, supply and ongoing programme technical support.
The programme demonstrated our ability to combine advanced light guide development with precision electronics, controlled LED selection and a dynamic global supply chain to deliver a consistent, production-ready lighting solution.

The Challenge
The L550 Discovery programme required an illuminated tread plate that could deliver a premium and consistent appearance while providing the flexibility to accommodate different insert designs.
The challenge was to create a common lightpack architecture capable of delivering highly uniform illumination across the visible area, while maintaining consistent colour and brightness from component to component.
The solution also needed to be suitable for both line-fit and aftermarket supply, requiring robust manufacturing processes and a supply chain capable of supporting the programme over the long term.
Our Solution
Elumin8 developed a complete LED lightpack solution centred around a precision-engineered polycarbonate light guide.
The light guide was designed to distribute light evenly across the illuminated area, achieving 96% uniformity and providing the visual consistency expected from a premium automotive component.
To maintain colour and brightness consistency, Elumin8 specified triple-binned LEDs. This enabled the required optical performance to be controlled through LED selection rather than relying on changes to resistance values, creating a more consistent and repeatable lighting system.
The lightpack was also engineered to accommodate interchangeable inserts, allowing the same underlying technology to support different illuminated designs and provide a greater degree of personalisation.
From electronic design and development through to validation, manufacture and ongoing technical support, Elumin8 managed the lighting technology as a complete system.
The programme was supported by a dynamic Asian supply chain, enabling Elumin8 to combine specialist manufacturing capability with its own expertise in light guide development, colour and brightness control, plastic injection moulding and ultrasonic welding.
The Outcome
The L550 Discovery illuminated tread plate became a flexible lighting platform capable of supporting both line-fit and aftermarket applications.
By combining a highly uniform polycarbonate light guide with carefully controlled LED selection and interchangeable inserts, Elumin8 delivered a solution that balanced optical performance, personalisation and production efficiency.
The programme continues to demonstrate Elumin8’s ability to develop and support automotive lighting systems over the long term — bringing together in-house engineering expertise, specialist manufacturing and a responsive global supply chain.
From the light source and optics through to moulding, assembly and supply, Elumin8 provided the technology and technical support behind a lighting feature designed to make the Discovery experience more personal.
