Higher resolution, smaller optics
At Auto China 2026, Marelli presented h-Digi MicroLED projection modules in 25K and 40K-pixel configurations.
The aim is not cinematic resolution for its own sake, but finer control of adaptive beams, road projection and
dynamic light functions.
A headlamp controlled by data
Digital lighting increasingly sits downstream of cameras, maps, ADAS controllers and vehicle software. The
optical output can change continuously according to road geometry, traffic, weather and vehicle state. That
makes the light source one element in a much larger information architecture.
Software changes the product cycle
A mechanically fixed lamp traditionally leaves the factory with most of its functional capability defined. A pixelated
light engine opens the possibility of adding or refining functions through software, subject to homologation and
hardware limits.
Resolution is only part of the story
Pixel count attracts attention, but efficiency, thermal performance, optical contrast, module size and cost will
determine how widely these systems spread. The most successful architecture may not be the one with the
largest number, but the one that delivers useful functions in the smallest viable package.
The Lux View
The headlamp is following the same path as the dashboard: hardware is becoming a platform for software.
MicroLED gives lighting engineers the addressability; the real differentiation will increasingly come from what the
vehicle chooses to do with it.
