Aircraft Lighting International is showing approved LED replacements that preserve existing aircraft infrastructure. The lesson for advanced lighting is that integration cost can matter more than spectacle.

The retrofit pitch at NBAA-BACE
Aircraft Lighting International used the 2026 NBAA-BACE business-aviation event to highlight two approved cabin-lighting routes: a colour-changing RGBW system and an LED replacement for legacy fluorescent tubes. Aviation International News reported the products on 19 October, noting that the supplier had obtained parts manufacturer approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration for the relevant components. The two solutions solve different problems. The RGBW system gives cabin owners configurable scenes and brand colours. The replacement tube targets operators who want the maintenance and electrical benefits of LED lighting without stripping out a functioning cabin and redesigning its wiring. In both cases, the attraction is not only the source of light; it is the ability to fit the new function into an existing aircraft.
Why approvals change the conversation
In a showroom, a colour-changing cabin looks like a styling upgrade. In an aircraft, the lighting system sits inside a tightly controlled electrical and safety environment. Approval scope, environmental qualification, compatibility with cabin management systems and the effect on maintenance documentation can decide whether a refurbishment is viable. The company’s RGBW system has passed RTCA DO-160 environmental testing, according to the event report, and is already installed in aircraft ranging from turboprops to large business jets. Aircraft Lighting International also lists compatibility with a range of cabin management systems. That matters because the lighting controls must work alongside equipment that may be decades old, supplied by different manufacturers and maintained by different operators.
The modest lamp with a strong business case
The company’s published 28-volt DC LED lamp range replaces selected fluorescent fittings without rewiring, using an adapter and retaining existing controllers. The manufacturer lists lower current draw, a polycarbonate housing and a claimed service life exceeding 60,000 hours. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent fleet-life measurements, but they illustrate the intended value proposition. For an operator, avoiding the removal of panels and wiring can reduce aircraft downtime and the risk of disturbing otherwise serviceable systems. Keeping a cabin’s existing control scheme also reduces training and operational disruption. There may be no dramatic new appearance when the lights are switched on, yet the economic benefit can be substantial.
A caution about “drop-in”
Drop-in should never be mistaken for universal. Lamp geometry, voltage, electrical protection, ballast arrangements, heat management and the exact approval basis must be checked for the specific aircraft and installation. A manufacturer’s compatibility claim is the start of engineering assessment, not a substitute for it. Even colour temperature and dimming behaviour may change the perceived quality of an interior after retrofit.
This is also a useful contrast with the trend towards deeply integrated smart surfaces. Integration creates compelling new functions, but it can increase the difficulty of replacing a failed component. Aviation’s conservative maintenance culture exposes that trade-off more clearly than many consumer applications.
The Lux View
Advanced lighting is often presented as a contest for the thinnest package or the most elaborate animation. This announcement makes a different point: a lighting product can win by removing installation work. For automotive, marine and aerospace designers alike, the best technology may be the one that fits the existing electrical architecture, clears the qualification hurdle and can be replaced without dismantling half the interior.
