Ambient Lighting Is Becoming an Interface

Honda’s Super-ONE links cabin illumination to BOOST mode, adding light to the
sound, display and powertrain cues that communicate vehicle state.

Light joins the feedback loop

Honda’s Super-ONE uses an LED line across the passenger side of the instrument panel as part of the car’s
BOOST-mode experience. The illumination changes alongside the meter graphics and active sound as the
vehicle moves into its higher-performance state.

 

Beyond decorative ambience

Ambient lighting has often been treated as mood decoration: selectable colours around doors and dashboards.
Linking it to vehicle state gives it a more useful role. Light can reinforce drive modes, charging, navigation,
warnings or automated-driving status without requiring another text message on a screen.

 

Peripheral information

One advantage is location. A broad light line can be perceived peripherally, allowing the driver to register a state
change without focusing on a small icon. Used carefully, that can make HMI more intuitive.

 

 

Designing a hierarchy

The danger is overloading the cabin with competing colours. If every subsystem claims the ambient lighting, the
interface becomes ambiguous. Functional light therefore needs the same hierarchy and standards as any other
HMI channel.

 

The Lux View

The next generation of ambient lighting will be judged less by how many colours it offers and more by whether
those colours communicate something useful. Decoration is becoming interface.
