BMW’s Neue Klasse design language makes an unusually explicit statement about the
changing role of automotive illumination: on the iX3, light now performs a visual job
once assigned to chrome.

From decoration to identity
For decades, chrome has done a disproportionate amount of work in premium-car design. It catches daylight,
frames grilles and windows, and gives relatively inexpensive surfaces a visual sense of precision and value.
BMW’s new iX3 suggests that illumination is beginning to take over that role. The company says the Neue
Klasse’s horizontal light signature assumes the role previously performed by chrome in giving the front of the car
quality and sophistication.
Why the change matters
That is more than a styling detail. Electric vehicles need less cooling air at the nose, while digital manufacturing
and LED technology give designers far greater freedom over what a front-end graphic can be. A light signature
can be visible by day and night, animated, personalised and potentially altered through software. Chrome is
static. Light can communicate.
A new design material
The important shift is to stop thinking of illumination only as a lamp. As light sources become thinner and easier to
integrate, the illuminated area can become part of the trim itself. Grilles, fascias, door panels and interior surfaces
can carry identity without requiring a conventional lamp housing to dominate the package.
The engineering opportunity
For engineers, the challenge is to deliver the effect without replacing a simple strip of trim with a heavy, deep and
expensive lighting assembly. Thin optical structures, printed electronics and surface-integrated light therefore
become strategically important: the more illumination behaves like a material, the more its packaging needs to
behave like one too.
The Lux View
BMW has put into words a wider change already visible across the industry. Premium identity is migrating from
reflective material to controlled light. The winners will not simply be the brands with the brightest signatures, but
those that integrate illumination so completely that the boundary between lamp, trim and body surface becomes
difficult to see.
