Mercedes-Benz has turned one of the car industry’s oldest styling devices into a
digitally illuminated surface, with an optional GLC grille using 942 backlit dots.

A familiar object, rebuilt
The traditional radiator grille is an awkward object in the electric era. Battery-electric vehicles do not need the
same large central air intake as combustion cars, yet the grille remains one of the most recognisable pieces of
automotive brand architecture. Mercedes-Benz’s answer on the electric GLC is not to remove it, but to change its
function.
942 points of light
The new grille combines a chromed frame, smoked-glass-effect lattice and contour lighting. An optional
illuminated version adds 942 backlit dots. The result is no longer simply a decorative aperture: it is an illuminated
graphic surface capable of creating a distinctive presence after dark.
Why surfaces are winning
The development reflects a broader movement towards illuminated panels, grilles, bumpers and trim. Once light
can be embedded behind or within a surface, designers can preserve a clean daytime appearance while adding a
second identity at night. The surface effectively gains another state.
Beyond decoration
The same architecture could ultimately carry more than brand graphics. As lighting, sensing and display
technologies converge, exterior panels may become capable of welcome sequences, charging-state indications,
safety messages and communication with pedestrians or other vehicles. Regulation will determine how far that
can go, but the technical direction is clear.
The Lux View
The EV did not kill the grille; it freed it from its original job. That creates a new canvas for lighting engineers. The
interesting question is now how much function can be placed into that canvas without adding unacceptable depth,
weight, complexity or cost.
