The flagship pattern
Automotive technology usually arrives at the top. High unit margins absorb expensive hardware and early
manufacturing processes, while premium customers provide a reason to pay for novelty. Lighting has followed
that pattern with matrix beams, OLED rear lamps and digital projection.
The Q3 signal
Audi’s decision to introduce a 25,600-element MicroLED headlamp module in the Q3 is therefore notable. A
technology associated with high-end digital lighting has reached the compact premium segment.
Optics meet software
As resolution rises, projection becomes closely tied to the software-defined vehicle. Cameras and ADAS systems
determine what is happening; software decides what information is useful; the optical system renders it at the
right location and intensity.
Scale changes priorities
As technologies move down the range, the engineering question changes. Cost, assembly time, commonality and
manufacturing yield become more important than demonstrating the maximum possible function. Suppliers that
can preserve the visual effect while simplifying the architecture gain an advantage.
Why this matters to surface light
The same curve will apply to illuminated trim and smart surfaces. What begins as a luxury signature eventually
has to become thin, robust, repeatable and economical enough for higher-volume vehicles.
The Lux View
The most important moment for a lighting technology may not be its first appearance on a flagship. It may be the
point at which it becomes ordinary enough to scale. That is when an interesting feature starts to reshape vehicle
architecture.
