Mercedes-Benz’s illuminated star patterns show how automotive branding is migrating
from badges and grilles into programmable lighting graphics.

142 stars
The latest CLA family uses a front panel containing 142 individually animated LED stars, while star motifs are
repeated in the headlamp and rear-lamp graphics. The result is not simply an illuminated badge; the brand
symbol becomes a repeating visual language across the vehicle.
Brand identity after dark
Traditional automotive identity is largely physical: grille geometry, badge shape, lamp outline and body proportion.
Programmable light adds a temporal dimension. A vehicle can now identify itself through an animation or
sequence as well as a static shape.
The software opportunity
Once brand graphics are digitally addressable, designers can potentially create regional, model-specific or
event-specific behaviours without changing major hardware. Homologation will limit some exterior functions, but
welcome and departure scenarios already demonstrate the principle.

Risk of visual noise
There is an obvious counterpoint. If every manufacturer fills the front of a car with animated brand motifs,
premium differentiation could become visual clutter. Restraint may ultimately be more valuable than pixel count.
The Lux View
Lighting is giving automotive brands something they have never really had before: a moving logo built into the
product itself. The opportunity is powerful, but the best brand signatures may be the ones that use
programmability with the greatest discipline.
