Technology You Can’t See Until You Need It

Continental and nobilia have hidden a working display, touch controls and other functions behind decorative surfaces – an interior concept with obvious automotive implications.

A screen behind wood

Continental’s ContiTech Surface Solutions and kitchen manufacturer nobilia have created a concept in which a full display remains hidden behind a translucent wood-effect decorative film until it is switched on. The same surface philosophy is used for touch controls, inductive charging and heating or cooling zones.

The crossover is deliberate

Continental explicitly describes the project as transferring technologies associated with premium passenger-car interiors into the home. That makes the concept particularly interesting: automotive and interior design are no longer borrowing only colours and materials from each other, but functional surface architectures.

Calm when inactive

The attraction is simple. Digital functions are useful when required, but screens and controls visually dominate a space when they are not. Hidden-until-lit design gives a surface two identities: material when inactive, interface when active.

Printed electronics underneath

Continental identifies translucency and printed electronics as enabling technologies. That combination points towards surfaces that can carry illumination, touch and potentially sensing without needing a conventional switch pack or exposed display.

The Lux View

The most sophisticated interface may be the one that disappears. Hidden-until-lit surfaces offer a route to adding digital capability while reducing visual clutter – and they make the material itself part of the electronics architecture.
