Why Should a Display Be Rectangular?

Transparent, flexible and retractable MicroLED development is challenging the assumption that a display has to be a fixed black rectangle.

LED display technology displays color image information on large wall areas in interior design.

The black rectangle problem

Modern interiors contain an increasing number of displays, but the basic object has changed surprisingly little: a rigid, dark rectangle mounted into the architecture. MicroLED’s high brightness, transparency and potential flexibility offer a route away from that format.

Display only when needed

AUO has demonstrated transparent and retractable automotive MicroLED concepts designed to preserve an open view when content is not required. That is a fundamentally different design proposition from making a conventional screen larger.

Surfaces instead of screens

If emitters can be distributed across transparent or non-flat substrates, information can follow the geometry of a window, dashboard or partition. The display becomes part of the object rather than an object inserted into it.

Manufacturing remains the gate

MicroLED still faces cost, transfer, yield and backplane challenges. Omdia nevertheless expects growth first in specialist applications where its unusual properties – brightness, transparency and conformity – solve problems other display technologies cannot.

The Lux View

The real promise of MicroLED is not simply a better television picture in a car. It is the possibility that the idea of a separate screen becomes optional. Once information can inhabit transparent and shaped surfaces, interior architecture changes with it.
